Gladys Louise (Garrett) Fox was born on August 22, 1929 in Louisa, Virginia.
Her parents were Willie Walter Garrett and Beatrice Lillian Garrett. She was
nicknamed Coots because she was so “cute.” She had seven brothers and sisters.
She was the oldest of the girls.
She married John Curtis Fox on November 5, 1949 in Harpers Ferry. She made
her home there where she attended Storer College. She graduated in June of 1950
with a degree in social work. She had two sons, John and Mike.
In 1963 she began working for the Berkley/Jefferson County Department of Welfare where she was a social worker. She was one of the first black social workers in the county’s history. She continued to protect children until 1972.
She then took a job as a social worker at the Jefferson County School District.
She also worked for the Title I program at the school district until she retired in 1990.
She was married to Curtis for 58 years.
She is survived by her 2 brothers and 3 sisters, her 2 sons, and her 12 grandchildren.
