Who is eligible to be buried in Maryland's State Veterans Cemeteries?
A veteran who was a legal resident in Maryland either (1) at time of entry into active service, (2) at time of death, or (3) for a period of at least two years.
A veteran is a person who served on full time active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces, other than active duty for training, and was discharged or released under conditions other than dishonorable. Those who enlisted in the military after September 7, 1980, and officers commissioned or who entered active military service after October 16, 1981, must have completed two years of continuous active duty or the full period for which they were called or ordered.
A veteran is also an individual who died while serving on active duty, or was disabled or died from a disease or injury incurred or aggravated in the line of duty while performing active duty for training or inactive duty training. Also, certain members of a reserve component of the U.S. Armed Forces who meet the legal residence requirements.
The spouse, widow or widower of an eligible veteran or service member, including the widow or widower of an Armed Forces member lost or buried at sea, or officially determined to be permanently absent in a status of "missing" or "missing in action" who met the legal residence requirement when the member was last known to have been alive. The surviving spouse of an eligible veteran who had a subsequent remarriage to a non-veteran and whose death occurred on or after January 1, 2000, is eligible for burial in a Maryland Veterans Cemetery, based on his or her marriage to the eligible veteran.
A child of an eligible veteran. A child is an unmarried person who is a legitimate or illegitimate child, a child legally adopted before the age of 21, a stepchild who acquired that status before the age of 21 and who is a member of the veteran's household at the time of the veteran's death and - who is under the age of 21 years; or who, before reaching the age of 21 years, became permanently incapable of self-support due to a mental or physical disability; or who is under 23 years of age and pursuing a full-time course of instruction at an approved educational institution.
Procedure for Arranging Interment
The funeral director or person making interment arrangements for an eligible person should communicate immediately with the Superintendent of the nearest State Veterans Cemetery. He should furnish all pertinent data, including military service information, the claim number of any Department of Veterans Affairs claim, Social Security number and other information establishing legal residence within the State. In the event of the veteran's or family member's death, the survivors should furnish to the funeral director a copy of the veteran's military discharge documents and proof of his Maryland residency. The funeral director will contact the cemetery to receive a burial eligibility determination and to schedule a date and time for the burial services.
Arlington National Cemetery
The persons specified below are eligible for ground burial and the last period of active duty of former members of the Armed Forces must have ended honorably. Interment may be casketed or cremated remains. For a more detailed list, contact the funeral home.

Any active duty member of the Armed Forces (except
those members serving on active duty for training only).
•
Any veteran who is retired from active military service with the Armed Forces.
•
Any veteran who is retired from the Reserves is eligible upon reaching age 60 and drawing retired pay;
and who served a period of active duty (other than for training).
•
Any former member of the Armed Forces separated honorably prior to October 1, 1949 for medical reasons
and who was rated at 30% or greater disabled effective on the day of discharge.
• Any former member of the Armed Forces who has been awarded one of the following decorations:
Medal of Honor, Distinguished Service Cross (Navy Cross or Air Force Cross), Distinguished Service Medal, Silver Star or,The Purple Heart.

The spouse, widow or widower, minor child, or permanently dependent child, and certain unmarried adult children of any of the above eligible veterans.
•
The surviving spouse, minor child, or permanently dependent child of any person already buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
•
The parents of a minor child, or permanently dependent child whose remains, based on the eligibility of a parent, are already buried in ANC.
•
A spouse divorced from the primary eligible, or widowed and remarried, is not eligible for interment.
