Michael Hal Wright, affectionately known by many as Commander Wright, departed this life after a rich and honorable journey. Born in Washington, DC on July 16, 1950, he was the beloved son of Maggie Nora Ingram and Robert Wright. He was raised in a large, close‑knit family and was preceded in death by his siblings John Lee Wright, Annie May Stancil, Eva Green, Shirley Sanders, Cecelia Wright, and Lenora Wright. He is survived by his siblings Francis, Geraldine, Walter, James, and Clint, who continue to honor his memory with love.

Michael was a devoted family man. He was united in marriage to Betty Johnson Wright, his loving wife of 46 years, who remained by his side through every season of life. He leaves behind his children: Steven Graham, Candice Rountree, Jason Wright (wife, Paralee Massie‑Wright), and Whitney Wright. His grandchildren brought him tremendous joy: Cheyene, Desmond, Dominic, Mackenzie, Legend, Camden, Kyley, Tyler, and Jase. He was also blessed to welcome his great‑grandson, Emery, who carries forward his light.  He also cherished his extended family as he leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He maintained the friendships that sustained him through the years, including Larry Carpenter, Terry Moses, and Rebecca Weber, along with many others who stood by him with loyalty and love.

Michael proudly served his country with distinction during the Vietnam War. He entered the United States Army on October 17, 1969, and served until April 21, 1972, receiving an Honorable Discharge. His military decorations reflect a life of courage and commitment: the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal with 60 Device, Combat Infantryman Badge, Vietnam Service Medal with Bronze Service Star, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Palm, and the Army Commendation Medal with 1st Oak Leaf Cluster for valor. He later continued his service through the Air National Guard from 1972 to 1973.

His dedication to public protection led him to the Smithsonian Institution's Office of Protection Services, where he began his career on March 27, 1978. Over the years, he rose to the role of Watch Commander, earning the respect of colleagues and visitors alike. He retired on September 19, 2017, after nearly four decades of steadfast service.

Michael valued education and personal growth. He attended Peabody Elementary School, Brown Junior High, and Spingarn High School. He continued his studies at the University of the District of Columbia, Jackson State University, and institutions in Alabama. His additional training included ATP21‑114 Benefits of Honorable Discharge, CBR training, Code of Conduct, Geneva Convention I, Military Justice, Vietnam‑era training, and LT WPINS INFORS.

Michael lived a life full of personality, curiosity, and joy. He loved crossword puzzles, buying cars, shopping, and savoring seafood. A natural conversationalist, he could turn any moment into a memorable exchange. He enjoyed dancing, often lighting up a room with his rhythm and charm, he had a lifelong interest in firearms, appreciating both their craftsmanship and history, and his favorite R&B artist was none other than the incomparable Luther Vandross. His life's journey took him many places, including time spent at Fort Carson, Colorado, shaping experiences he often shared with humor and pride.

Michael's life was marked by service, resilience, humor, and a spirit that welcomed connection. His legacy lives on in the stories he told, the people he loved, and the many lives he touched along the way.
