DR. PANSY ELIZABETH JACOBS JACKSON SEPTEMBER 25, 1930 – APRIL 26, 2022 On April 26th, 2022, Pansy E. Jacobs Jackson; the "Duchess", as she was affectionately known, peacefully transitioned from the battlefield to Glory at approximately 6:36am at Hope House Assisted Living in Laurel, Maryland at age 91. Dr. Jackson was born Pansy Elizabeth Jacobs Jackson on September 25th, 1930 to Reverend L. W. Jacobs Sr. and his wife, her namesake Pansy Elretta Jacobs in Hopewell, VA. She received her early education in Hopewell City Public Schools including Carter G. Woodson High School; where she graduated as salutatorian the mid -1940s. Pansy went on to Virginia State College (now University) where she received her first degree, a B.S. in English & Literature, at the age of 19 and pledged Alpha Kappa Alpha. Considered by law still too young to teach at the collegiate level, she continued pursuing her Masters degree, earning it 2 years later at 21. She would go on to teach in Springfield, Illinois and Tuskeegee Institute, Alabama while finishing her Ph.D.; returning as full professor to Virginia State University in the late 1960s where she spent the next three decades of her career until retirement. In the late 1990s, as a Founder for the National Association of African American Studies, Dr. Jackson traveled to three continents to deliver white papers on the critical alliance of cultures and nations necessary to include English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) in all accredited colleges in the continental United States and all Education Centers attached to military bases that afforded higher learning; both domestic and abroad. "The Duchess" had been a proud and grateful member of Third Baptist Church in Petersburg, VA for a great many years at the time of her death. She was especially fond of and appreciated by her Monday Night Bible Study which she taught for years. Her faith was more important to her than her secular accomplishments and of all her titles, she preferred to be called "Mom" and Mama J. She is lovingly survived by her three daughters, Donna Maria Tucker, Shari Jackson Small, and KoKita Valynnte Chambers (Michael), her older brother L. W. Jacobs, Jr, and her younger sister C. LaFern Jacobs Phillips; four grandchildren; Amber Tucker (Quinton), Danny Tucker, Jr. (Tasha); Jordan Jackson Small, Jovani Rosborough (Tim); seven great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, friends, associates, students and fans. She was preceded in death by her younger brother Julius Jacobs, and her younger sister Ann Elmore. Her marriage to CSM Carl L. Jackson ended in divorce. There will be a "Celebration Of Life" for Dr. Jackson on Friday, May 20th at 12:00pm at Third Baptist Church in Petersburg, VA. Repast to follow at Reconciliation Fellowship Church; 621 W Washington St, Petersburg, VA.
