Thomasena Thrower Hayden, affectionately known as "Mommy Tommy", departed this life on Sunday, February 6, 2022. Thomasena was born December 30, 1932, the only child to Ethel Kate Thrower in Lancaster County, South Carolina. She was educated in Lancaster County Public School system, graduating in 1950. She attended the Barber-Scotia College in Concord, North Carolina. During this time she performed as one the attendants in the Annual May Day Festival where Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune was the guest speaker. Thomasena married the love of her life Clarence William Hayden on August 28, 1952. From this union two children were born, Ethel Christine Hayden and Clarence William Hayden, Jr. The family relocated to Washington DC, in 1954. After relocating to DC she connected with Metropolitan Wesley AME Zion Church in 1961. In 2000, she started attending Zion Church of Landover with her daughter. Thomasena was genuinely loving, caring, nurturing and thoughtful. She was a strong supporter of family and the foundation for bringing families together. Her livelihood was caring for children, even to the point of taking an Infant CPR course to provide the care for a premature baby. She lovingly cared for Michelle, Leslie, Stacy, Tony, Lil Gary, Donnie, Jermaine, Adrian, Tonya and Rahman to name a few. Thomasena was preceded in death by her husband Clarence William Sr. and her son Clarence William Jr. She leaves to cherish her memories, her daughter Ethel Christen Hayden and her grandson William Kendall Hayden; sister-in-law Roemaine Hayden-Moore of Brewton, AL., brother-in-laws Bennie Hayden, Van Wyck, SC and Sylvester Hayden (Faye); the Watson and Morris families; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
